The Ellenville Village Board of Trustees recognized Family of Ellenville for 50 years of service to the community, presenting the organization with a commemorative plaque at a recent meeting.

Program Director Tiffany Santiago accepted the award, surrounded by other members of the organization.

Trustee Latisha Kentop shared a personal story about turning to Family for help roughly 20 years ago, when she was struggling to furnish her household.

“I actually found a cast iron pan in the kitchen area at Family that I still have,” Kentop said. “And every one of my children have heard the story of when Mom had nothing, and Family provided that pan.”

Kentop said her experience illustrates the importance of having community organizations available to support residents through difficult times.

“You never know where you will end up in life, but organizations like Family belong in our communities,” she said.

Trustee Nilsary Lewis-Rivera also recalled how Family helped her family when they first moved to the village.

“When we came to the village, Family opened its doors to us and thanks to them we were able to stay,” Lewis-Rivera said.

She also volunteered with the organization’s hotline and food pantry when Family was located on Church Street, spending several hours a day helping residents.

“It was rewarding to see the people come in and we were able to help them,” she said.

The board’s recognition highlighted Family’s longstanding role in supporting residents and providing assistance during difficult times. The trustees’ personal accounts underscored the lasting impact the organization has had on local families.

Recognition for Trustees

The meeting also included recognition of two local leaders involved in American Heart Association initiatives.

Melissa Rodriguez of Ellenville Regional Hospital announced that Kentop had been nominated to represent the 2027 Women of Impact campaign, recognizing her contributions and dedication to the community.

Lewis-Rivera is leading the Ellenville area’s Teen of Impact campaign, which aims to inspire young people to contribute to the fight against heart disease.

The announcements highlighted local efforts to encourage community service and raise awareness of heart health.
